                    Climbing

High up in the apple tree climbing I go,

With the sky above me, the earth below.

Each branch is the step of a wonderful stair

Which leads to the town I see shining up there.

Climbing, climbing, higher and higher,

The branches blow and I see a spire,

The gleam of a turret, the glint of a dome,

All sparkling and bright, like white sea foam.

On and on, from bough to bough,

The leaves are thick, but I push my way through;

Before, I have always had to stop,

But to-day I am sure I shall reach the top.

Today to the end of the marvellous stair,

Where those glittering pinnacles flash in the air!

Climbing, climbing, higher I go,

With the sky close above me, the earth far below.

स्याउको रुखको टुप्पोमा म चढ्दै जान्छु,
माथि आकाश, तल धरती देख्छु।
प्रत्येक हाँगा अद्भुत सिँढीको पाउला जस्तै,
जहाँबाट म उज्यालो शहर देख्छु टाढा चम्किँदै।

चढ्दै, चढ्दै, अझै माथि,
हाँगाहरू हल्लिन्छन्, अनि म टावर देख्छु,
गुम्बजको चमक, गजुरको झिल्को,
सेतो समुद्री फिँज झैँ, उज्यालो झलमल।

हाँगाबाट हाँगामा अघि बढ्दै,
पातहरू बाक्लो, तर म बाटो बनाउँदै,
पहिले सधैं रोकिन्थेँ,
तर आज मलाई पक्का छ — टुप्पोसम्म पुग्नेछु।

आज त्यो अद्भुत सिँढीको अन्त्यसम्म,
जहाँ झिलिमिली गजुरहरू हावामा चम्किन्छन्।

चढ्दै, चढ्दै, माथि नै पुग्दै,
आकाश नजिक, धरती टाढा तल देख्दै।

About this Poet

On February 9, 1874, Amy Lowell was born at Sevenels, a ten-acre family estate in Brookline, Massachusetts. Her family was Episcopalian, of old New England stock, and at the top of Boston society. Lowell was the youngest of five children. Her elder brother Abbott Lawrence, a freshman at Harvard at the time of her birth, went on to become president of Harvard College. As a young girl she was first tutored at home, then attended private schools in Boston, during which time she made several trips to Europe with her family. At seventeen, she secluded herself in the 7,000-book library at Sevenels to study literature. Lowell was encouraged to write from an early age.

Analysis/Summary of the poem

The poem, ‘Climbing’ has been composed by Amy Lowell. She has focused on her determination of climbing the apple tree to its top so that she can achieve her goal.

In the first stanza she goes very high up the apple tree where she sees the sky above her and the earth below. She feels each branch of the tree like the step of a wonderful stair. Each stair leads her to see the town that is shining up.

In the second stanza she says that she tries to go higher and higher. She sees that the branches produce spires from where the gleam of a turret and the glint of a dome can be seen sparkling brightly like white sea foam.

In the third stanza she moves on and on from one borough to another bough where she finds thick leaves. These thick leaves have been symbolized as hindrances before her achievement. She pushes those leaves back and moves ahead because she is fully determined that day to reach the top by facing all circumstances.

In the fourth stanza, she has moved to the stair that is quite marvellous. She finds glittering pinnacles and flashes in the air there. She repeats the second line of the first stanza as a conclusion of the poem in the last line. This shows that she has successfully achieved her goal.

This poem teaches its readers a lesson that the work they start shouldn’t be stopped due to obstacles that come into their way. They must move on and on by facing the unfavourable circumstances. In this way they can achieve their goal ultimately.
