The Voice of The Rain

The Voice of The Rain

And who art thou? said I to the soft-falling shower,

Which, strange to tell, gave me an answer, as here translated:

I am the Poem of Earth, said the voice of the rain,

Eternal I rise impalpable out of the land and the bottomless sea,

Upward to heaven, whence, vaguely form’d, altogether changed,

and yet the same,

I descend to lave the droughts, atomies, dust-layers of the globe,

And all that in them without me were seeds only, latent, unborn;

And forever, by day and night, I give back life to my own origin,

and make pure and beautify it;

                                                      Walt Whitman

                           वर्षा को स्वर

र ती सबै कुरा जसमा म बिना थिए, केवल बीउ मात्र, लुकेका, जन्म नलिएका;
र सदैव, दिन-रात, म आफ्नै उत्पत्तिलाई जीवन फर्काउँछु,
र यसलाई शुद्ध र सुन्दर बनाउँछु।

                                —-Walt Whitman

Analysis/Summary of the poem

‘The Voice of the Rain’ has been composed by Walt Whitman. He has personified the rain because she answers the question asked by the poet like a human being. In the beginning of the poem the poet inquires the light rain who she is. The light rain answers him promptly. The poet has translated her voice in a public language so that even common people can understand it. The rain answers him that she is the poem of the earth. Here ‘poem’ means ‘song’. It means as the poem (song) gives relaxation to the heart, similarly the rain gives life to all living-things on the earth. The rain is eternal. She is difficult to be touched, felt or understood when she goes out of the land and the fathomless sea. She goes upward to the sky in an invisible.form. Although she changes her form, yet remains the same.

She falls down to finish droughts. She washes atomies and dust-layers of the world. She says that the seeds inside the earth cannot grow but remain latent and unborn unless it rains. The poet compares the rain with a song as they both share a common journey. The song originates from the heart of the singer, travels across to fulfil its aim and ultimately goes back into the heart of the singer. Similarly the rain gets birth from water stores, gives life to the living-things of the world and goes back into the water resources to make pure and beautify them.

The poem is a conversation between the poet and the rain. When the poet asks the identity of the drizzle, she replies that she is the poem of the Earth. The rain expresses that it gives happiness to mother Earth.

The rain is a perpetual process which has different forms at different times. It rises from the land as water vapour and ascends high up to the sky. It takes the form of clouds. Though it changes its form or shape, its originality remains unchanged. It shows that nature is not fully understood. Some parts of it always remain mysterious.

The raindrops pour down from above to wash away atomies and dust layers. It quenches the thirst of the dry Earth and heals everything that is becoming lifeless. In other words, the showers make the Earth pure and beautiful.

Finally, the poet observes that the life of rain is similar to that of a song. A song also has the power to calm rhythm, transform and thrill. In the same way, repeated evaporation and condensation purify the rain. It beautifies the whole earth as a rhythm does to a poem or music.
